Apply thin and even coat of joint compound directly on the wall over seam. Tip – You may need to add water to the joint compound to create a consistency of a thick milkshake. It should spread easily without falling off your knife.

Place paper drywall tape over seam and smooth with 6″ putty knife. It is easier if you “tape” one seam at a time, slightly overlapping tape. Tip – Keep the area a flat – level as possible. This will make the following coats of joint compound easier to apply and easier to feather into the existing wall surface.  Allow to dry thoroughly.

Note – Many websites and even professionals will show the use of fiberglass tape for patches. Gypsum manufacturers recommend using paper drywall tape with regular joint compound.
